Normal History Vol. 407: The Art Of David Lester

Every Saturday, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 33-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

I recently switched email programs. The new one gave me the option to upload audio notification, so I added part of a song I created a few years ago. As it turns out, this wee bit of audio fits into almost every film or whatever music I might be listening to when an email arrives.

It’s me telling me, “It’s OK,” a few times. I mean … I know it isn’t actually OK, but I feel better hearing it. If anyone wants it for their email program, let me know and I’ll send it to you.

MP3 At 3PM: The Revelers

The Revelers hail from Louisiana and will soon release Play The Swamp Pop Classics, which is exactly what it sounds like—the group embracing its southern-Louisiana roots and playing some classic tunes for a new era. Opener “A Trip To The Moon” is a swinging song originally performed by Gary U.S. Bonds, and it sure is a good time in the hands of the Revelers. Check it out below.

MP3 At 3PM: Tommy Keene

keeneshowtunes

For a small subset of listeners inclined toward powerful guitar pop, Tommy’s Keene 2000 effort, Showtunes, is a strong contender for second on the list of great live records. (The Who’s Live At Leeds being first, of course.) Self-released and sold on his recent tour, and now on his website, Showtunes II—as the name implies—is a sequel. Largely comprising a 2014 solo show opening for Matthew Sweet, Showtunes II also includes two tracks from a 1996 concert featuring the late Jay Bennett in the lineup. A scorching version of “Call On Me” from the latter gig showcases Keene’s underrated guitar prowess.

MP3 At 3PM: Matthew Squires

matthewsquires

Matthew Squires will release Tambaleo on January 20, and today we’re very excited to share his new track “Shape Of Your Heart.” The song takes on many different styles and moods throughout its three-minute run, mapping a terrain that will be sure to please fans of ’90s Modest Mouse. Squires switches from comedic self-evaluation (“I am the antichrist”) to earnest lovelorn profession at the drop of a hat. Check it out below.

MP3 At 3PM: JD Werner

jdwerner

JD Werner is getting ready for a big start to 2017, which will see the release of new record Station Of Lost. To help the rest of us get through the end of this year, the artist has been gracious enough to share “Pressure Your Way,” a groovy, relaxed tune he says is “written from the perspective of a New Yorker lost in a new, foreign California landscape. It’s about feeling the pressure of a failed bi-coastal existence and questioning the heart and path of a expiring relationship.” Check it out below.

R.I.P. Circus Devils (2001-2017)

laughslast laughsbest

OK, so these real demons aren’t officially dead yet, but Robert Pollard‘s Circus Devils (psychic pilots to say the least) are clocking out February 24 after an always-entertaining 16-year run. (They apologize in advance, of course.) The 17-track Laughs Last is the 14th LP by Circus Devils, and it finds Uncle Bob and the Tobias brothers in their all-over-the-place greatness. Also out the same day is Laughs Best (The Kids Eat It Up), a 30-track best-of comp spanning the band’s entire career that includes a 32-track DVD. Listen to the stellar “Do The Nixon” (which appears on both records) below, and buy them here. Circus Devils, to quote the man himself, “We’ll miss you so much.”
